Screening Performance of the Mental Health Inventory-5 in Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy

ActiveLead investigator Colby OitmentUpdated 27 Oct 2026
What this study asks
Design and population
A pooled analysis of three large international studies covering 1,020 adults having surgery for a spinal cord condition in the neck (degenerative cervical myelopathy).
Groups compared
A quick 5-question mental health survey was compared with the longer, standard 36-question health survey to see if the short version could flag the same patients with poor mental health.
Main outcomes
How often the short survey correctly identified patients flagged as mentally unwell by the longer survey, both at a single visit and over a full year of recovery.
Analyses
Researchers checked how often the two surveys agreed, which patients they disagreed about, and how much of the agreement was just because the short survey's questions are literally reused inside the long one.
