Mental Health Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Surgical Treatment for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Key finding
Patients with degenerative cervical myelopathy start with mental health scores about 9 points below the general population (41 vs 50 on a 0-100 scale) — a deficit on par with heart failure or clinical depression — and surgery closes most of that gap, improving scores by 7.4 points and lasting up to 5 years.
Mental health impairment in this common spine condition is under-recognized but largely reversible with surgery, supporting routine psychological assessment before and after decompression.
